American Hustle


American Hustle is the cinematic equivalent of pantomime – big hair, big accents, big acting –  a cynical, awards-baiting concoction that plays to the gallery; so slavishly does it follow the formula of last year’s best picture winner, Argo, that it may actually be a sequel. O Russell is better than this.


Silver Linings Playbook


A defiantly modest film, it’s hard not to praise SLP too much, and spoil its particular charm. But it is a beautiful film; impeccably acted by all concerned (seriously, just how mesmerising is Jennifer Lawrence?), it manages to be moving in a way other films are too inelegant to achieve.
