More remix than remake, Evil Dead keeps many of the elements that made the first three films such a cult success, and despite some terrible dialogue, a general humourlessness and an inappropriately-named dog, the film excites, establishes better context than the original and works by being as vile as possible.

An odd mix of Disney fairy tale, Burton nightmare and indeed Raimian horror, OTGAP nevertheless works: Franco is absolutely the man you might have imagined the wizard to have formerly been – and everyone else (except Weisz) is campily spot-on – while the production design is simply gorgeous. Well done.
